The Social Security Administration (SSA) will send its last round of monthly checks to Social Secuirty beneficiaries on Wednesday, 24 April. Each month, the government agency sends millions of payments, with those for retired workers reaching 50.6 million people. Last month, the average value of the payments sent by the SSA to retired workers was $1,913.31.

Already this month, those whose birthdays fall between the first and twentieth of any month have received their payments.

On 24 April, those born on the 21st through the 31st will finally receive their benefits, as will any family members entitled to benefits for a living or deceased worker. Additionally, beneficiaries who have been receiving benefits since before May 1997 have been paid by the SSA as the group sees their checks deposited on the third of the month unless the day falls on a weekend or holiday; in those cases, the SSA will make the payment on the previous business day.

The Social Security payment schedule for May

As mentioned above, when a person receives their Social Security benefits depends on the day they were born.

In May, the payment calendar will look like this:

  • Wednesday, 1 May: SSI beneficiaries
  • Friday, 3 May: Beneficiaries who received their payments before May 1997 & those who receive both Social Security and SSI
  • Wednesday, May 8th: Beneficiaries born between the 1st and the 10th
  • Wednesday, May 15th: Beneficiaries born between the 11th and the 20th
  • Wednesday, May 22nd: Beneficiaries born between the 21st and the 31st
  • Friday, May 31st: SSI beneficiaries (payment corresponding to June)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries will see two payments in May because the first of the month, when they typically receive benefits, falls on a Saturday in June. Therefore, the checks will be sent on Friday, 31 May. The following payment for those on SSI will not come until Monday, 1 July.

What we know about the 2025 COLA

July is also the first month included in the SSA’s Cost-of-living adjustment calculations. When the Consumer Price data for the month becomes available in August, we can begin forecasting the value of the 2025 COLA with greater accuracy.

The SSA compares the Consumer Price Index from the current year’s third quarter (July, August, and September) to that recorded last year to determine the percent value by which benefits will increase. The 2025 COLA, which could be worth more than what was offered this year, will be made public in mid-October. This year, a COLA of 3.2 percent has been tacked onto benefits, and inflation has already eaten away at more than one percent of this increase. Since the 2024 COLA was announced, inflation, represented by the Consumer Price Index, has risen 1.4 percent.
