The US ranks number one in the world when it comes to consumer spending, with the country’s consumer market making up almost 29% of global spending, according to The World Counts. With all the money that is being shelled out, there comes the very real possibility of complaining about what has been paid for.

According to the Consumer Federation of America, there has been a lot to complain about. The organization dealt with almost 600,000 complaints last year filed with various city, county, and state consumer agencies across the country.

The federation managed to recover more than $740 million for consumers through mediations and other measures. Their latest report is based on information they gathered from surveying 36 agencies in 25 states.

What are the top consumer complaints in the US?

The US has more than 275 million vehicles registered to drivers, so it comes as no surprise that number one on the grievance list is car sales and repair. This category has now been at the top spot for the seventh consecutive year. Customers lodged complaints regarding add-on products and services, as well as mechanical issues involving their vehicles.

Home repairs and renovations landed in second place, with home owners complaining of sloppy repair work by unqualified or incompetent contractors.

Consumer debt and credit made it to number three, which is also not a surprise considering that the debt of Americans has surpassed $17 trillion for the first time in history.
