As geopolitical tensions push crude prices sharply higher, a pioneering European project could point toward a more stable energy future.
The UK drills 3 miles underground and finds a real alternative to oil
Fears of an oil shortage caused by the war in Iran pushed crude prices up by around 5% again on Thursday, sending global markets into the red after U.S. President Donald Trump failed to provide clarity on the direction of a conflict that is now approaching its fifth week. West Texas Intermediate crude has climbed above $104 a barrel, while Brent crude, the European benchmark, has risen past $105, gaining more than 5%.
Against that backdrop, a new energy project is attracting attention. Unlike wind or solar power, this technology does not rely on weather conditions and can generate electricity around the clock, making it a far more stable alternative to intermittent renewable sources. The project has been developed by Geothermal Engineering Limited, whose work represents one of Europe’s most ambitious renewable energy initiatives.
The system is relatively straightforward. Through ultra-deep drilling into granite rock, it extracts water at temperatures exceeding 190°C (374°F), which is hot enough to drive turbines and generate electricity without producing polluting emissions.
The facility, located near Redruth in Cornwall, southwest England, takes advantage of the geological formation known as the Porthtowan Fault Zone. High-temperature water is brought to the surface, where its heat is used to generate electricity. Once the water has cooled to around 50°C (122°F), a second crucial stage begins: the recovery of strategic minerals, including lithium, a key component in electric vehicle batteries.
According to current figures, the plant is already capable of supplying electricity to around 10,000 homes, and future plans call for it to produce enough lithium to supply thousands of electric vehicles each year. The combination of geothermal power generation and lithium extraction positions the technology as one of the most promising long-term alternatives for the future of clean energy.
