Japan’s surge in super seniors
In 2025 alone, approximately 52,310 people celebrated their 100th birthday, underscoring Japan’s unmatched life expectancy. Among the nation’s oldest residents is Shigeko Kagawa, a 114-year-old woman living in Yamatokoriyama, a quiet suburb of Nara. Also notable is Kiyotaka Mizuno, a 111-year-old man residing peacefully in the coastal town of Iwata.
Health Minister Takamaro Fukuoka publicly congratulated the country’s centenarians—87,784 women and 11,979 men—thanking them for their decades of contribution to Japanese society.
“Their lives are a testament to the values and resilience that have shaped our nation,” he said.

Why Japan leads the longevity race
Experts point to Japan’s low mortality rates from heart disease, common cancers, and strokes as key factors. Diet plays a major role: the Japanese consume significantly less animal fat and sodium compared to Western countries, which may contribute to healthier aging.
Japan now holds the title as the Asian country with the highest number of people aged 100 and older, reinforcing its reputation as the world’s longevity leader.
