Update:

Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand eggs are being recalled, but not all stores have sold the eggs that fall under the health advisory. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the company has opted to voluntarily recall 10,800 units of their  Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs, after finding out that there is a risk of Salmonella contamination within their supply chain. This is the ninth outbreak on record this year, and that figure is one of the highest since 2020.

Where were the eggs sold?

Costco members in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee who may have purchased this product after November 22, 2024, are encouraged “return the identified units to their local Costco” if the unit is labeled with the Julian code 327 and if they have a use by date of Jan. 5, 2025.

FDA urges caution as this becomes the ninth outbreak this year

So far no illnesses from Costco’s eggs have been reported, but as outbreaks of Salmonella rise, public health officials are encouraging companies to take extreme precaution. The CDC estimates that around 1.35 million cases of Salmonella occur in the US each year. Though not typically fatal, new strains of salmonella have shown resistance to the antibiotics typically prescribed to patients who become in effect. Public health advice suggests that doctors only prescribe antibiotics in severe cases, to limit the risk posed by resistant strains.
