Month after month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out monthly checks to retired workers, to recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), as well as other disability and survivor benefits.

Thanks to the 8.7 percent increase in the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), average retiree payments increased to about $1,830 in February 2022. On the other hand, median payments for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients are approximately $675.

Sometimes recipients of SSI will receive two payments in a month, but sometimes they get none.

SSI payments are scheduled to be sent out on the first day of the month. However, if the first day falls on a weekend, the payment is sent in advance. That is the case this month, where instead of sending the check on 1 April, it was sent on 31 March. This means that SSI beneficiaries received two checks in March and none in April.

SSI recipients receive their payments on the first or last days of each month if the first day falls on a weekend. Those who began receiving their Social Security payments before May 1997 receive their benefits on the 3rd of each month; these payments will be made on 3 April.

All other Social Security checks are sent based on recipients’ birthdays:

  • Second Wednesday (12 April): retirees with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month;
  • Third Wednesday (19 April): beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month; and
  • Fourth Wednesday (26 April): retirees with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of any month.
