The Isle of Man was colonized by the Vikings in 798, serving as an ideal port from which they could launch naval attacks, open trade routes, and leave behind a rich trail of historical remnants.

Treasures from the past are still waiting to be discovered. And on the Isle of Man—located between England and Ireland—a new fragment of a Viking treasure from the 11th century has just been unearthed. This time, it’s a flattened piece of an intricately woven gold bracelet, a remarkable artifact now under analysis.

It was found thanks to a metal detector

“At first, I couldn’t believe it. Gold usually gives off a very low signal on detectors, so you never know what you’ll find. I’ve been searching for gold for years and have found some amazing things, but discovering a piece of Viking gold is truly extraordinary,” said Ronald Clucas, the man who uncovered the object.

The island was colonized by Vikings in 798, fierce Scandinavian warriors and seafarers who took over coastal Europe between the 9th and 11th centuries. According to a report from Manx National Heritage, its central location in the British Isles made it a prime base for Viking naval raids and trade missions.

Over the years, the island has revealed dozens of Viking graves, as well as architectural remains, ships, tools, weapons, clothing—and now, this newly discovered gold artifact.
