They stole a safe in the middle of the mountains - what they did next is even crazier
In Catalonia, northeastern Spain, a group of thieves pulled off a heist at an isolated mountain-top hotel in the Pyrenees.
A group of thieves has pulled off a robbery at an isolated hotel in Vall de Núria, tucked high in the Catalan Pyrenees in north-eastern Spain. The intruders made off with a large sum of money and a large safe weighing over 650 pounds.
The heist went unnoticed until dawn, when hotel managers discovered the door wide open and the safe room completely emptied. At that point, the Mossos d’Esquadra - Catalonia’s police force - were called to the scene.
The hotel is only accessible by a rack railway that connects the valley with the town of Queralbs, both in winter and summer. Early indications from investigators suggest the thieves carefully planned the operation and likely used a sled to haul the safe out of the building.
Did the thieves crack the safe?
The individuals involved then appear to have dumped the safe down the side of the mountain, before fleeing the area. For the moment, it’s unclear whether they managed to break it open and remove its contents.
Although authorities managed to locate the safe, it remains out of reach for now. The high risk of avalanches makes it impossible for either police or firefighters to intervene. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify those behind the robbery.
