Update:

While most of us tuck away lottery tickets or, if you’re like me, forget them altogether, one Australian couple discovered that their ticket—hidden in plain sight—was a multimillion-dollar winner. The ticket, purchased in East Brighton, Victoria, turned out to be one of the four top division winners in a recent Powerball draw—paying out just over AUD 20 million (around $13 million).

Despite having the winning ticket on their fridge, they simply hadn’t checked it, as life had just been too busy. What’s more, neither was signed up with The Lott Members Club, which means the lottery officials had no way to inform them directly. “That’s insane! I’m in shock!” the winning wife told The Lott when they finally managed to contact the lucky couple.

To add to the good luck, it was revealed that the numbers weren’t even ones they’d thoughtfully selected: “Oh wow. It was just a QuickPick (a random computer system), but I see my lucky number is here, and some family birthdays and anniversaries. It was meant to be.” The numbers were: 9, 22, 23, 3, 13, 28 and 32, with number 5 as the Powerball.

As for what they plan to do with all that money: family comes first. “We have bought tickets on and off for years. I can’t believe it,” the winning wife said. “Heck! I don’t know if I should keep working or retire. I’ve had a radical change of plans for the day, that’s for sure. It will take a long time for this to sink in.”

They also intend to buy “a little house” and now, after years of working hard, the possibility of retiring is now very real.

The owner of the local store where the ticket was bought, Sajjad Sadeghi Goorbandi of the East Brighton News agency, told The Lott: “I can’t believe it! This is the best news. This is actually the first Division One winning ticket we’ve sold since I took over ownership two years ago. I’m so happy. I’m going to call my colleagues now and tell them the great news. Congratulations to the winner! Thank you for supporting us!”
