This husband found the perfect anniversary gift: A $100,000 winning lottery ticket
It was Jeffrey Douglas and his wife’s 31st wedding anniversary on Sunday and the North Carolina couple got a pleasant surprise with $100,000 lottery prize.
Jeffrey Douglas normally brings home the bacon through his tree-cutting business but on Sunday he and his wife got a pleasant windfall, a $100,000 lottery prize. And it couldn’t have happened on a better day. “It was our 31st wedding anniversary on Sunday,” he told the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Jeffrey, a resident of Cherryville, had stopped off in Lincolnton to buy a $50 scratch-off ticket for the $10 Million Spectacular game at the Times Turn Around gas and convenience store on East Main Street. Upon revealing his prize, he texted his wife a picture of the winning ticket. She immediately responded, “call me,” he recalled as he laughed.
“It was pretty awesome,” Douglas shared. “It’s a blessing.”
Plans to share winnings and help his business
Douglas told state lottery officials that he will share the winnings with his family and use some of the funds to help his tree-cutting business when he collected his prize on Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Charlotte. In total, he took home $71,764 after paying the required state and federal tax withholdings.
He didn’t seem to upset though by the reduced amount, joking with lottery officials: “Do you know how many trees you have to cut to win this much money?”
Big prizes from $10 Million Spectacular game still out there
The $10 Million Spectacular game was launched in December 2023. Originally, there were 20 prizes of $100,000, 20 prizes of $1 million, and five top prizes of $10 million, available to players, along with numerous other prizes ranging from $50 to $50,000.
The North Carolina Education Lottery says that there are still some of the biggest prizes waiting to be won. Currently, one $10 million prize, and two each of the $1 million and $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
