Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party. This decision comes amid growing pressure from within his party and plummeting poll numbers. As Canada faces this significant political shift, here’s what is likely to happen next.

However, Trudeau announced he will stay on as leader until his successor is chosen.

Before leaving, Trudeau announced the progroguing of parliament, basically closing the elected chamber until 24 March.

How will Justin Trudeau be replaced?

Thus, the Liberal Party will organize a leadership convention to choose a new permanent leader. These conventions typically take several months to arrange which may be an issue with an election having to happen before October this year.

Formally, the Governor General of Canada, currently Julie Payette, will appoint the new Prime Minister once the Liberal party has chosen its leader

The new Prime Minister must maintain the confidence of the House of Commons to govern effectively. If they fail to do so, it could trigger a vote of no confidence and potentially lead to an early election.
