Update:

In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, led by the Liberal Party, is facing challenges as another key member of his administration, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, has resigned. Her resignation stems from disagreements regarding Trudeau’s approach to the economic threats posed by President-elect Donald Trump.

In a letter on social media, Freeland announced her departure and informed the public that Prime Minister Trudeau offered her another role in the cabinet last Friday.

Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet,” stated the exiting minister. The letter also warned the government and the public about the seriousness of the country’s economic situation, with Donald Trump threatening to impose a 25 percent tariff on all goods coming from Canada, including their oil exports. “We need to take that treat extremely seriously,” noted Freeland, adding that such efforts must be undertaken to ensure the country has the “reserves [it] may need for a coming tariff war.”

The prime minister has taken a more relaxed position towards Trump than Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who warned that she was prepared to go toe to toe in a tariff war should the incoming US leader choose to start one. On the other hand, Trudeau visited Mar-a-Lago, where Trump lives while in Florida, a move that Freeland characterized as a “costly political gimmick” that could “make Canadians doubt that [the government] recognize[s] the gravity of the moment.”

Could this be the end for Truduea?

Prime Minister Trudeau has led Canada since 2015. After a series of high-level departures, his administration has been weakened, and he may lack the support necessary to lead his party in the upcoming elections

scheduled for October 2025. Canadians could be asked to go to the polls in a snap election if the government collapses before the Fall.

As deputy prime minister, Freeland has positioned herself as a possible successor to Trudeau. If enough Liberal party members feel that she could better represent the country during the Trump era, Trudeau could see his position taken away.
