Throw in a bunch of coins when paying the toll and get the best lesson: “Aren’t you glad you waited?”

After trying to make a petty point with a sack of small change, the driver found himself stuck in neutral while the cashier took his time.

Update:

Fed up with the day’s heavy traffic – or perhaps hoping to get to his destination faster – an American driver opted to take a toll road. When he reached the toll booth, he was met by an employee who has now shared the encounter on Reddit. It was, in his words, an exercise in patience – because the driver had decided to pay the toll, which came to around $5, entirely in the smallest coins he could find.

To make matters worse, he handed over the mountain of change with a sarcastic quip: “Here you go, enjoy counting,” he said. But the driver was in for a surprise. As it turned out, he was about to be paid back – quite literally – in the same cheeky currency.

The toll booth worker calmly told him to put the car in neutral and wait. Counting the coins, he explained, would take time – and he made it clear: if the driver tried to leave before he’d finished, he’d call the authorities to bring him back and verify the payment.

The process was, by design, slow and deliberate. More than once, the stacks of coins the worker had carefully built “accidentally” toppled over, forcing him to start again.

The smarter way to pay tolls.

“You’re only bothering an employee”

Eventually, the last coin was counted. The driver’s attempt at a prank had backfired – he had actually overpaid by 20 cents. “Here’s your change. Aren’t you glad you waited?” the employee said, handing it over and finally waving the driver on his way.

The Reddit post drew a flood of reactions. Some labeled the incident “petty revenge”, while others stood firmly behind the worker, pointing out that toll booth staff are just doing their jobs and shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of people’s frustrations.

“I don’t get people who think they’re fighting the system,” one user wrote. “No – you’re just annoying an employee who’s trying to pay the rent.”

The post was edited to add: “for those worried about the people behind this guy, it was a slow day. No one was waiting but him.”
