Toyota has announced it is recalling approximately one million vehicles whose sensors may be defective, possibly causing the failure of the passenger airbag to deploy in the event of a crash.

The affected cars are equipped with the Occupant Classification System sensor which is engineered to determine whether the front seat passenger is a child or an adult through their weight.

What is the sensor defect that caused Toyota to recall around one million vehicles?

If the sensor detects that the person is a child, the airbag may not deploy during a collision because the force of the airbag is designed for adult-sized occupants, and can cause injury to children.

In some of the recalled vehicles, the OCS sensor was not manufactured properly and can possibly short circuit. This could mean the airbag may fail to deploy when it actually needs to do so.

If you own one of the affected vehicles, Toyota will notify you by the middle of February 2024. You must then bring your car to a Toyota or Lexus dealer where they will check the OCS sensor and, if necessary, replace it for free.
