“It’s something unique.” That’s how British YouTuber Harry Jaggard described the Pyongyang Metro in North Korea. This subway system is known for being the deepest in the world, with 17 stations spread over a total of 22 kilometers of track.

One of the things that stood out the most to the young traveler was the price of the ride, which cost 100 North Korean won, the equivalent of $0.07 USD or €0.062. “It’s nothing,” he said. He also pointed out the statues and portraits of the country’s leaders found throughout the stations. “They’re everywhere,” he noted.

Another detail that caught his attention was the posters on the platform walls, which locals often read while waiting for the train. “I think it’s the only time the locals don’t mind reading—because they’d rather do anything than talk to us,” he remarked. Once inside the train, he commented on its appearance and how the passengers were arranged.

“It’s crazy,” he concluded in his video, after getting off the train, which was packed with passengers. The construction of the Pyongyang Metro began in the 1960s, but it wasn’t inaugurated until 1973. The system has two lines: the Chollima Line, which runs north to south, and the Hyoksin Line, which goes from east to west. Inside the trains, there are portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.

As shown in the video, the layout, decor, and depth of the subway system captivate many tourists. These features make it stand out from other metro systems in the world’s major cities. It’s also worth noting that the system doubles as an air raid shelter in the event of an enemy attack.
