Earthquake hits California in the middle of tropical storm Hilary: Epicenter, magnitude and affected areas

As California residents prepare for Tropical Storm Hilary, the first such weather system to hit the southern part of the state in 84 years, a new earthquake is reported in the Golden State.

According to official information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), on Sunday afternoon, an earthquake was recorded near Ojai in Ventura County.

Magnitude 5.1 earthquake hits Southern California

As Southern California braces for heavy winds and torrential rain, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the area. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was in Ojai, between Santa Barbara and Ventura, and it took place along the Sisar fault..

Airlines suspend flights at Ontario International Airport in California

Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines have suspended flights to and from Ontario International Airport in California.

Southwest is suspending all flights from 12 p.m. PT Sunday through 10:30 a.m. PT Monday. while Frontier has suspended all flights Sunday and Monday. 

Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for updates on their flights. 

Ontario International Airport is situated about 40 miles east of Los Angeles.

Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall on the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico and is speeding toward Southern California.

As the state braces for flooding and hazardous winds, Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency for most of Southern California to support the response and recovery efforts around the storm.

The storm has weakened from a hurricane, but it is expected to bring extreme and wide-reaching effects to California and the Desert Southwest.

Nevada governor declares state of emergency

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency due to the imminent threat from Tropical Storm Hilary on Sunday, as current forecast models predict severe weather across the state of Nevada.

The emergency declaration follows Gov. Lombardo's decision to activate 100 Nevada National Guardsmen to Southern Nevada earlier this weekend.
