Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson is in Russia and announced he will interview President Vladimir Putin, as many Americans are not informed about the war in Ukraine. In a video posted on X, he explained why he was doing an interview that comes with inherent risks.

“Most Americans are not informed. They have no real idea what’s happening in this region, here in Russia or 600 miles away in Ukraine,” he said from Moscow.

“They should know, they’re paying for much of it,” he added.

Critic of US aid to Ukraine, defender of Putin

Carlson is the first Western journalist to interview Putin since Russia’s all-out invasion on Ukraine two years ago. He has been critical of US aid to support Ukraine’s war effort since the war began, and has also been a staunch defender of the Russian leader.

Why is Vladimir Putin such a bad guy? He’s not Saddam Hussein, he’s not Adolf Hitler, he’s not a danger to the United States,” he said in 2017. Right before Russia waged war on Ukraine, he said, “Hating Putin has become the central purpose of America’s foreign policy.”

Reports: Carlson’s Putin interview took two hours

The Kremlin said the interview has already taken place, according to The New York Times. Hours after the conservative pundit’s statement on social media, Russian reports indicated that Carlson had conducted the interview over approximately two hours, and that it would be released soon.

There has been no announcement of exactly when the interview will be broadcast, but the right-wing host will upload his interview with the Russian leader on X, where he also has a show, and the website of his media startup called Tucker Carlson Network (TCN) on TuckerCarlson.com, according to CNBC.

Carlson was one of the most popular and influential TV hosts in the US until he suddenly left Fox News last year.
