Are we seeing a 'Red Mirage'?

A red mirage occurs in election processes when the initial count of in-person votes, which are typically cast on Election Day, is conducted before the tallying of early, mail-in, and provisional ballots. In the current context, Donald Trump appears to be leading in both the popular vote and the electoral college count. However, analysts and observers caution against concluding the election results at this stage, as a significant number of Democratic votes remain uncounted. There are still plenty of major population centers in the swing states where Democrats are expected to run up the numbers to compete with the GOP which will do the same in rural areas.

This delay is largely attributed to voting patterns, as members of the Democratic Party are statistically more inclined to utilize early voting options. As the counting progresses, these ballots are now beginning to be processed. The tabulation of these votes can be time-consuming, as each mail-in ballot must go through several verification steps: the envelope has to be carefully opened, the voter's signature must be meticulously matched against official records to ensure authenticity, and finally, the votes need to be scanned into the system for counting.

Kamala Harris projected to win New York

The Democratic nominee for president, Kamala Harris, is expected to win in New York. Leading up to Election Day, some political analysts speculated that the state could be competitive. However, as the results come in, they contrast sharply with those from Florida, another state some believed could be a swing state in this election.

Additionally, Donald Trump attracted a large crowd at Madison Square Garden a little over a week ago, leading some to think that his support was growing. Ultimately, while there are pockets of strong support for the former president, it was not enough to turn the state red.

With 18 percent of the vote counted, Harris has received over 70 percent... this lead is expected to shrink as more ballots are processed and tabulated.

Polls are closing in the swing states: Results check in

Voting is about to conclude in Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin, which means that more results will soon be available from these key battleground states. Meanwhile, the other four states being closely monitored—Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, and Pennsylvania—either have not yet closed their polls or remain too close to call, with only a small portion of the vote reported thus far.

Some election experts see Pennsylvania as the most important state up for grabs tonight. Kamala Harris has a sizable lead, but only 14 percent of the vote has been counted. In Georgia and North Carolina, Donald Trump leads by 10 and 8 points, respectively

Immigration is one of the key issues this election, and according to Fox’s exit poll on the national level, majority of voters (56%) prefer that immigrants be given a chance to obtain legal status to resorting to deportation.

Exit poll: violence asked and expected

The fact that CBS News' exit poll asked voters specifically about the prospect of violence related to the US presidential election should concern everyone, no matter what part of the political spectrum you sit on.

This is the first time in history, which dates back to the 1970s, that it was even felt needed to ask.

And around 70% of voters questioned do expect said political violence. That figure applies to Republicans and Democrats.

Exit poll: economy tops it for Fox

Exit poll: democracy, economy, abortion

We knew they were going to be important topics and the candidates targeted their messaging appropriately (or not, in some cases) throughout the campaign.

While NBC have a Georgia exit poll showing 62%-35% in favour of abortion being legal, CNN also share their numbers that the top three issues were, in order, democracy, economy, abortion

Americans "dissatisfied"

While I'll continue to repeat that this is early exit poll data, the expected "dissatisfaction" and "anger" is being pulled through from voters.

Chris Wallace says it would be "a miracle" if Harris wins "with that kind of headwind," adding that it "would be a remarkable job."

According to early exit polls reported by CNN, Kamala Harris holds a lead in three key swing states:

Michigan: Kamala Harris 61% – 35% Donald Trump

Wisconsin: Kamala Harris 60% – 38% Donald Trump

Pennsylvania: Kamala Harris 57% – 40% Donald Trump

These figures suggest a significant advantage for Harris in these pivotal states. However, it's important to note that exit polls are preliminary and may not fully represent the final vote counts. Official results will be confirmed as all ballots are counted.

Talking of the swing states, there is one in particular that political scientist, lawyer, and US elections expert, Dr David Schultz, believes is critical for Vice President Harris to take.

If she “can’t win Pennsylvania, her math gets much more complicated,” he said as part of our interview with him.

Swing states: when to expect a result in 2024

Thanks to some excellent work at the NYT, the following provides a decent guide to when we may be able to paint a clearer picture of the battleground states:

Georgia: Fast count, typically. 94% of votes counted by midnight in 2022; watch the margins for early clues.

North Carolina: Quick results with new counting rules, though initial votes may take a bit longer.

Pennsylvania: Likely to take beyond election night. Improved from 54% counted by midnight in 2020 to 87% in 2022.

Michigan: Could be faster this time; only 51% counted by midnight in 2020, but reforms may speed it up.

Wisconsin: Expect most counts by Wednesday. Progressed from 71% in 2020 to 86% by midnight in 2022.

Arizona: May take several days; mail-in ballots require time to process.

Nevada: Also could take days. Postmarked ballots accepted up to four days post-election, though new tech might help speed things up.
