Update:

Venezuela will purchase exclusively American-made products using the money generated from a newly announced oil agreement, President Donald Trump said, positioning the United States as the country’s primary trading partner.

Trump said Venezuela will spend the funds from the oil deal only on U.S. goods, a move he described as beneficial for both nations.

What Venezuela will buy from the U.S.

According to the Republican president, the list of products Venezuela will import includes U.S. agricultural goods, medicines, medical devices and equipment manufactured in the United States to help improve Venezuela’s power grid and energy infrastructure.

“Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States of America as their principal partner - A wise choice, and a very good thing for the people of Venezuela, and the United States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Details of the U.S.-Venezuela oil agreement

The trade announcement follows news that the Trump administration has reached a new oil deal with Venezuela. Under the agreement, the Venezuelan government will deliver millions of barrels of oil to the United States, which will sell the crude and manage the proceeds.

According to Trump, the funds will be controlled by the U.S. government to ensure they are used “for the benefit of the Venezuelan people and the United States.”

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said Venezuela’s provisional authorities will deliver between 30 million and 50 million barrels of high-quality, authorized oil to the United States.

“This oil will be sold at market price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States!” Trump said online.

Oil shipments and projected revenue

Trump said he has instructed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute the plan immediately. The oil will be transported aboard storage vessels directly to unloading docks in the United States.

Based on market prices on the day of the announcement, Trump said the oil sales would generate more than $2 billion.

U.S. to oversee Venezuelan oil sales indefinitely

The United States will not only sell the Venezuelan oil already being transferred. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the U.S. will oversee Venezuela’s oil sales indefinitely, while emphasizing that the country is not being stripped of its oil, since the revenue from those sales will ultimately be returned to Venezuela.

“We need to have that influence and that control over oil sales to push for the changes that simply must happen in Venezuela,” Wright said Wednesday at Goldman Sachs’ annual energy conference in Miami.
