Video captures Strombolian eruption of Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano

A video shows the moment that the Popocatépetl Volcano in Mexico erupted. It should be noted that this was a Strombolian eruption, which are considered more mild to be less violent. However, volcanic ash can still carry serious dangers.

Mexico City had to temporarily shut down its two main airports due to the ash fall. The volcano is around 45 miles away from Mexico City. Ash can be especially dangerous for aircrafts as it both limits visibility and can cause damage to the aircraft itself. The airports have since reopened as activity has decreased.

Though the volcano has been less active since the explosion on Saturday morning, authorities are keeping a close eye on it and are keeping the threat at an intermediate level.
