In recent years, several establishments including stores and restaurants have announced the closure of multiple branches across the United States. The decision to close up shop has been influenced by various factors, ranging from poor company performance to a shift in consumer trends, to poor management. Giant retailer Walmart is among the companies that have been announcing they will end operations for certain locations.

Due to the poor performance of some of its stores, the world’s largest retailer closed a total of 24 branches in 2023, exceeding the 15 outlets originally announced. The closures mainly affected consumers in Washington DC and Chicago, which were the states where the most shutterings were recorded. Illinois, Florida, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas and Hawaii also saw some of their stores being closed down.
