Warhammer 40K Darktide: when was it created, release time and how to play it?
The futuristic sequel to the Vermintide games is out on 30 November but Xbox players will have to wait a bit longer for the full release.
Fans of gaming, video or tabletop, are looking forward to the next installment of the Warhammer 40,000 series. While popular for its miniature wargame, a number of big titles have been released in recent years such as Space Marine, Dawn of War, and now Darktide.
The game is released today, 30 November, after a successful Beta test. The game was initially slated for release last year but covid-19 related delays mean it is released for PC players today. Xbox players have to wait even longer though it is still listed as being available this year.
What is Warhammer 40,000 and what is Darktide about?
The setting is 38,000 years in the future from our current time, hence the title Warhammer 40,000. Humanity has spread across the stars thanks to an army of super-human warriors called Space Marines and billions of normal human soldiers called the Astra Militarum. Society has regressed into a authoritarian cult under the authority of the God-Emperor, a decaying corpse kept alive by the sacrifice of thousands of psykers (the word in the setting for wizards). Humanity is kept at war with every alien and heretic in order to keep the empire propped up hence the tagline for the setting; “In the grimdarkness of the far-future, there is only war.”
If that sounds bleak that is because it’s supposed to be. It doesn’t get any better for the protagonists of Darktide either; your squad of four is made up of misfits condemned to undertake any mission in the service of the Emperor, or die trying. Assisted by handlers from the Inquisition, you and your three teammates must battle your way thorugh hordes of corrupted humans and mutated terrors on planets and starships.
How can I play Darktide?
PC players can download the game the game from Steam, where it costs $39.99. As mentioned, Xbox players will have to wait longer but it is rumoured the game will be available on Game Pass.
The game is released simultanously around the world based upon 6 p.m. GMT. This means players in the US can play at 1 p.m. EST and 10 a.m. PST.
Players can play by themselves and be randomly matched with other players but as the game is built for teams of four having friends along to play is recommended.
