Heavy snowfall will continue in several parts of the United States in the coming days, accompanied by strong winds.

Update:

Large parts of the United States are under winter storm alerts as heavy snow and powerful winds are expected to continue over the next few days, making travel difficult.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), “strong winds, accumulating snow, and icy conditions are forecast across several states from Montana to Michigan from Monday, December 8, through Wednesday, December 10, driven by two Alberta Clippers moving across the northern U.S.

The weather forecast for the next few days

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) reports that this afternoon, snow linked to an upper-level trough and a developing low-pressure system is already underway in North Carolina and Virginia. The system is expected to intensify quickly and move off the Mid-Atlantic coast tonight (December 8), ending the snowfall but pulling Arctic air farther south along the East Coast.

Record-breaking cold: The Arctic blast could set new low-temperature records Tuesday morning (December 9) across the interior Mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

Strong winds: Gusty conditions are forecast across the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies, and northern Plains over the next several days.

Heavy snow bands: As one Clipper moves east into the northern Plains and Upper Midwest late Tuesday (December 9), moderate to heavy snow is expected to develop along the northern flank of the low-pressure center.

By Wednesday (December 10), snow will gradually taper off in the northern Plains but spread into the Lower Great Lakes and parts of the interior Northwest.

Regional outlook

The Southwest will be dry and warmer than normal, with mild conditions continuing. Pleasant, dry weather expected through midweek is forecast for the Central & Southern Plains / Deep South, and Florida will experience a gradual trend toward drier conditions.

From Montana to Michigan, brace for dangerous travel conditions through midweek, while the East Coast prepares for record cold. Meanwhile, much of the South and Southwest will enjoy calm, dry weather.
