Update:

We’ve all been there, finding ourselves sitting beside another passenger on a subway or train journey who insists on blaring out their music from a tinny mobile phone speaker or the passenger who insists at watching their Instagram reels with the volume cranked up.

In a bid to make train travel a more pleasant experience in the Emerald Isle, Irish Rail have issued a new “Passenger’s Charter” and general public transport etiquette guidelines, outlines a number of expectations for passengers to ensure a safe and pleasant journey for everyone.

The network also promises to fine rail users over a $100 for passengers who defy the regulations.

On certain routes, such as Dublin to Cork, there is a designated “Quieter Coach” where passengers are expected to keep noise to a minimum. This includes quiet conversations and ensuring music from headphones cannot be heard by others.

Irish Rail has recently launched a campaign and is enforcing a rule against playing music or videos out loud on trains. Failure to use headphones for personal audio can result in a €100 ($115) fine. This also extends to having loud phone conversations.

Other areas where passengers need to comply including a refrain from smoking and vaping on the Irish Rail network and a focus for patrons to keep feet off the seats.
