Wendy Morse, Dave Thomas’ daughter, explains how she became the fast food chain’s mascot: “He wanted a character”
There are several hugely popular burger chains, but not so many who were named after a little girl.
Wendy Thomas Morse grew up knowing her father, Dave Thomas, was building something special. What she didn’t understand, at least not at the age of 8, was that her name and likeness would become inseparable from one of America’s most recognizable restaurant brands. Speaking with People, she explained how being the inspiration for Wendy’s brought both pride and pressure.
Who is the girl behind Wendy’s?
She says the reality didn’t fully hit her until she left home for college. That was when introductions became complicated. New acquaintances often reacted with surprise – or assumptions – once someone else revealed who she was. “There were times I didn’t want people to know,” she admitted, noting she feared classmates might see her differently once they connected her to the chain. Still, she embraced the role over time. “It was something I really took on as a responsibility,” she said.
People still react as though she’s sitting on “a pot of gold,” she joked, even though the company has long been publicly traded. Representing the brand, she added, is an honor she tries to uphold with humility.
But the pressure that came with her name weighed on her father, too. About a decade before his death, he told her he regretted naming the restaurant after her. “He just goes, ‘I’m really sorry I did that to you,’” she recalled. Hearing him acknowledge the burden was unexpectedly meaningful. “It was just nice to hear that he felt for me.”

Today, when she sees the Wendy’s sign, it’s her father’s legacy she feels most strongly. His focus on fresh beef, simple philosophy, and customer care remains at the heart of the brand. “I just see my dad,” she said. “That’s why we’re trying to do it Dave’s way, every day.”
