What are the payment methods for receiving Social Security in the U.S.?

Last year, the SSA announced it would eliminate one of the oldest payment methods for Social Security benefits.

Update:

The Social Security Administration quietly rolled out a major change last September — one that pushed thousands of beneficiaries to update how they receive their monthly payments. The agency officially eliminated paper checks, ending one of its oldest payment methods and moving entirely to electronic deposits.

Here’s how the system works now, and what it means for anyone receiving retirement, survivor, SSDI, or SSI benefits.

Social Security now pays benefits in only two ways

As of last fall, the SSA no longer mails paper checks. Instead, beneficiaries must receive their money through one of two electronic options:

  • Direct deposit into a bank or credit union
  • Direct Express debit card, a prepaid card for people without a bank account

Funds are deposited electronically and become available on the beneficiary’s scheduled payment date.

Anyone who was still receiving checks by mail must switch to an electronic method to keep getting their benefits. The update can be made through a my Social Security account.

Why the SSA ended paper checks

The agency cited several reasons for the shift:

  • Security: Paper checks are far more vulnerable to theft or loss.
  • Cost savings: Electronic payments are significantly cheaper for the government to process.
  • Modernization: The move aligns Social Security with federal requirements to digitize government payments.

When Social Security payments arrive

The payment schedule itself hasn’t changed — only the delivery method. Here’s the official timeline:

SSI payments

  • Sent on the 1st of each month (If the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payment arrives the previous business day.)

Social Security retirement, survivor, and SSDI payments

  • 3rd of each month: For people who started receiving benefits before May 1997.
  • All other beneficiaries: Paid based on birthdate
    • Second Wednesday: Birthdays on the 1st–10th
    • Third Wednesday: Birthdays on the 11th–20th
    • Fourth Wednesday: Birthdays on the 21st–31st

If a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deposit is made on the prior business day, again following Eastern Time.
