Fast food has become an integral part of US culture, with chains around the country selling meals on demand from a range of different countries.

However, despite the popularity of fast food, a report from Technomic said that now, we are actually spending less than before, an occurrence perhaps explained by the price increases people are experiencing in their daily lives.

The Technomic report, which lists 2023′s most successful brands, ranked the top ten fast food chains in the country. And as you might expect, the drop off in spending, the sales figures are still eye-watering to look at.

Top fast food chains in USA:

  1. McDonald's ($53.1 billion)
  2. Starbucks ($31.6bn)
  3. Chick-fil-A ($21.6bn)
  4. Taco Bell ($15bn)
  5. Wendy's ($12.3bn)
  6. Dunkin' Donuts ($12bn)
  7. Burger King ($11bn)
  8. Subway ($10bn)
  9. Chipotle ($9.9bn)
  10. Domino's ($9bn)

As usual, the top three chains on the list appear firmly entrenched in their respective positions, putting out sales figures that blow their nearest competitors out of the water.

This is also arguably the case for Taco Bell, whose lead over Wendy’s has grown since last year. While the combined sales of these top-ranked chains may be huge, it’s difficult to imagine that anyone, even Starbucks, or any other brand for that matter, ever challenging McDonald’s lead in the world of fast food.

Another curious feature is that these brands are unchanged from the ranking that came out this time last year, showing the overall dominance of a few brands within the field. People like that they like.

Change is not impossible, however. A decade ago, according to the statistics, Subway were up in second, a position that has been firmly occupied by coffee chain Starbucks.

One chain that you may be surprised to not see on the list is KFC. With 4273 locations across the country, it has been a staple brand in the States since it was founded in Salt Lake City in 1952. However, the people are clearly voting with their feet as well as their mouths, and the Finger Lickin’ Good chicken doesn’t make the cut.
