Policy or pop stars? Pop stars.

Donald Trump, the presumed nominee for president on the Republican ticket, questioned why singer Taylor Swift would throw her support behind President Joe Biden earlier this week. Taylor Swift is one of the most sought-after endorsements in politics. Her fan base consists of millions in the United States, and many take her political considerations seriously when determining their views. In early October 2020, Swift endorsed President Biden just as President Trump was recovering from a bout with COVID-19. Being infected by COVID hurt Trump in the weeks preceding the election. After underplaying the threat of the virus, his infection reminded many voters of the threat posed by the novel illness when no vaccines were available.

Taylor Swift’s support for Democrats has always been a sore point for Donald Trump, who understands how her endorsement influences the votes of millions. In a meeting with Republican congressional leaders on Thursday, the pop star came up, with the former president reportedly asking, “Why would she endorse this dope?” He added that Biden “doesn’t even know how to get off the stage,” the type of attack he uses quite frequently against the president.

Donald Trump reconciles Taylor’s support for Democrats

The focus on Swift by Trump and his team is nothing new. In his forthcoming book, Variety editor Ramin Setoodeh recounts a conversation with the presidential candidate, in which he asked about his opinions on the global music sensation. Donald Trump responded that she was “unusually beautiful.” He lamented that she was a “liberal” and that she probably didn’t like him very much based on her endorsement of President Biden in 2020. The comments make it appear that Trump might be a fan of Taylor’s and that his obsession over her possible nomination of Joe Biden is interpreted by him as a personal attack by a celebrity he likes.
