Did you enjoy the 2023 Golden Globes? There was certainly no shortage of fancy outfits on show, and a few decent speeches and jokes thrown in across the ceremony as the awards for top performances and contributions to those involved in movies and television were handed out. Well done, Hollywood Foreign Press Association!

Eddie Murphy references Will Smith in success blueprint

One of the most special awards on Tuesday night in LA went to Eddie Murphy, the comedian and actor. The 61-year-old received the Cecil B. DeMille award, which is given by the HFPA to a person in the entertainment industry who has made “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” The award is named in honor of the legendary filmmaker. It’s effectively a Lifetime Achievement award to those that have had a big impact on the industry.

As he was making his acceptance speech, including multiple thanks to those that have been involved in his 46-year journey, which he highlighted was an award “a long time in the making”, Murphy made reference to one of the most shocking incidents of Golden Globe history. That moment came in the 2022 ceremony, when Will Smith walked onto the stage and slapped presented Chris Rock for a joke he made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

“I want to let you know there’s a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. I’ve followed it my whole career. It’s very simple,” Murphy said. “There’s three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your fucking mouth!”

After the show, Murphy spoke with Access Hollywood.

Who is Eddie Murphy?

Eddie Murphy is an American actor, comedian, and filmmaker who rose to fame in the 1980s. He began his career as a stand-up comedian and then transitioned to acting, starring in movies such as Beverly Hills Cop, Trading Places, and Coming to America. All classics! In these movies he delivered many iconic quotes including, “I’m too old for this shit” as the Detroit police detective outside his jurisdiction and, “I’m your king” as pampered Prince Akeem, also finding himself far from home comforts.

Murphy is known for his ability to play a wide variety of characters, and that also saw him land the part that made his voice recognisable to kids around the world as lovable Donkey in the animated Shrek movies. “I’m a stallion, baby!”

Throughout his career, Eddie Murphy became a true comedy legend and gave us some of the most memorable comedy moments in film history.
