After being arrested in Pennsylvania, Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, faces five charges.
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed on Wednesday, December 4. Nearly a week after the incident, Pennsylvania authorities identified the suspect: Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old former Ivy League student.
Mangione was arrested Monday morning, December 9, by authorities in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The police department received a call from a McDonald’s employee, who identified the suspect. During the arrest, law enforcement officers reportedly found multiple fake IDs, a U.S. passport, a gun, a silencer, and a handwritten manifesto.
In the manifesto, Mangione criticizes the healthcare industry for prioritizing profit over people, suggesting the intentions behind his actions. Mangione exact motives are still being investigated.

Currently, Luigi Mangione faces five criminal charges in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested:
- Forgery (Grade 2 felony)
- Carrying a firearm without a license (Grade 3 felony)
- Tampering with records or identification (Grade 1 misdemeanor)
- Possession of instruments of crime (Grade 1 misdemeanor)
- False identification to police (Grade 3 misdemeanor)
Additional charges related to Thompson's murder will be determined by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, where the crime occurred. Formal homicide charges are expected to be filed at that time. As set by the judge, Luigi Mangione will remain in custody throughout the proceedings. He is not entitled to bail.
Mangione is due to appear in court on December 23 in Pennsylvania. An arrest warrant is pending against him in New York, where the crime occurred, as Brian Thompson was killed outside the Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan, New York when the company was holding an Investor Day conference.
