What is Boris Johnson’s net worth and what was his salary?
The Prime Minister of the UK is essentially the most powerful individual in the country, but the role does not command a particularly high salary.
Boris Johnson’s time as Prime Minster of the United Kingdom will soon come to an end after less than three years in office. A slew of scandals and accusations of dishonesty from some of his closest allies have made is position untenable and he was pressured by his party to stand down.
Johnson comes from a very wealthy family, enjoyed a privileged upbringing and has held numerous high-profile jobs in both politics in the media in the past three decades.
His net worth is thought to be around $2 million, according to analysts at Celebrity Net Worth.
How much did Boris Johnson earn as Prime Minister?
When Johnson won a landslide electoral victory in the autumn of 2019 he became Prime Minister, a position he is known to have coveted for all of his adult life. Despite the theoretical authority of the Queen, the powers of government are largely controlled by the Prime Minister and he became the nation’s leader.
Despite the huge importance of the role, it did not earn him a particularly significant payday. The annual salary for a Prime Minister is currently £79,936. However he also retained his salary as a Member of Parliament, which is worth £84,144 per year.
This means that he was being paid a total annual salary of £164,080 while in the role of Prime Minister.
In addition to the financial recompense, he also gains use of the flat at No. 10 Downing Street in the heart of London. He is also able to use a luxurious countryside residence in nearby Buckinghamshire, known as Chequers.
Despite having announced his resignation, on Thursday evening reports emerged that he was hoping to remain in office for at least another month so he was able to host a wedding anniversary party at Chequers. He, and his wife Carrie, are now thought to have agreed to move the festivities to another location.
Johnson bagged huge payday for Shakespeare book
With his extensive history as a journalist Johnson has authored a number of successful books, many of which focus on key people and events in British history.
In 2015 he landed a lucrative deal with publishers Hodder & Stoughton to author a book entitled Shakespeare: The Riddle of Genius. He struck a deal for a reported £500,000 seven years ago but has repeatedly pushed back the publishing date.
When he was elected as PM in 2019 he said that he “won’t be able to rapidly complete a book on Shakespeare that I have in preparation. I honestly say that will grieve me.”
Now that he will soon leave office, he may finally have the time to write the biography and likely pen a book on his time as Prime Minister.
