Barack Obama made history as the first African-American president of the United States, and after serving for two terms, he continues to wield his influence through different pursuits.

Since leaving office in January 2017, the former President has maintained a busy and meaningful life, keeping himself involved in a variety of activities including public speaking, writing, advocacy, and charitable work. As he turns 63 on Sunday, August 4, here’s a look at what Obama has been up to these past years.

Obama, the author

Obama published the first of a planned two-volume series of his presidential memoir, “A Promised Land” in November 2020. It provides a detailed account of his early political career and the first term of his presidency, wrapping up with the events leading to the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011. Taking three years to be complete, the book became a New York Times bestseller. The second volume’s release date has yet to be announced.

This organization was created to “inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world.” It focuses on leadership development and civic engagement. Through the foundation, Obama continues to support and mentor young leaders and community organizers around the world.

The foundation is also overseeing the construction of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, which will house a library, museum, and community programs.

Post-presidency politics

While Obama has largely stayed out of day-to-day politics, he has been active during election cycles, endorsing candidates, and campaigning for Democratic candidates, including Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election, and currently, Kamala Harris for the 2024 ballot.
