What is the new tool to check the status of my immigration application? How does it work?

The USCIS has released the MyProgress tool, which allows applicants for certain immigration procedures to know the time frame for their application.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has several resources available for people to be able to consult the waiting time remaining for their immigration procedures, including a recent tool known as myProgress.

myProgress gives applicants access to personalized estimates of their wait time for the main steps of their case or procedure, including how long the final decision will take.

However, this tool is only available for certain procedures, including the following:

  • Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization
  • Form I-131, Application for Travel Document
  • Form N-400, Application for Naturalization
  • Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card
  • Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative
  • Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status
  • Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status

How can I check the waiting time?

To view estimated time schedules, applicants must first create a USCIS online account or log into their account and select their pending application.

If you electronically submitted or linked one of the applicable forms to your online account using an online access code, you will see a myProgress tab for your application.

The myProgress tab shows the estimated wait time until your case has a decision, along with a check mark as the steps are completed:

  • Confirmation that the document was received
  • Biometric services appointment completed (if necessary)
  • The decision on the pending case

Although the estimates are based on historical patterns of similar procedures, they do not accurately indicate the exact time, since each case is different and may have some delays.

Other tools to check the status of your immigration case

If you have filed an immigration application or petition with USCIS, you can also check the progress of your case status online or by phone.

Online

Use the online case status tool to check for updates on your immigration process. You will need the 13-character receipt number from your application or request.

By phone

If you are calling from the United States, contact the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. If you are outside the United States, call 212-620-3418 or contact a USCIS international office.

Check the processing times of your procedure

If you are eager to know the status of your immigration application, you can also find out how long it may take to process something on the USCIS website. Check that you have the necessary information during log-in. When using the tool, you will need to select the following:
