The spider roll is one of the most common menu items at Japanese restaurants in the United States. Still, the name might cause some aversion for arachnophobes (i.e., those afraid of spiders) even though the roll does not contain any spiders.

The ingredients are soft-shell grab that has been breaded or battered, avocado, cucumber, and daikon sprouts and is often topped with spicy mayonnaise after being rolled up in seaweed, also commonly referred to as nori and sushi rice.

Where does the spider role get its name?

The name is inspired by the look of the roll, which often features crab legs sticking out of each side, making it appear somewhat like a spider.
