As Memorial Day weekend approaches, it is expected that up to 43.8 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles from home, with AAA reporting that this year will be the second highest travel forecast since 2000.

As for the weather forecast, it’s a mixed bag across the country, with various states set to face a variety of conditions, going from warm and dry skies to cloud, rain and storms.

“Storm-fatigued residents across the middle of the nation will not catch a break during the extended holiday weekend. While each day will not be a washout everywhere, and some locations will be fortunate enough to miss thunderstorm activity Saturday through Monday, there will be areas that get doused on more than one occasion across the Plains states,” detailed AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Renee Duff before mentioning “heavy rain, difficult travel and even localized flooding, and incidents of hail and strong winds”.

When is Memorial Day 2024?

This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27, 2024, the last Monday of the month. This tradition has been going since 1971. Many Americans choose to travel on this weekend, which is also known as the ‘unofficial start to summer’, meaning that the weather can play a huge role in the plans of the nation.

As for the weather, if we start in the north-east, it looks set to be warm and dry, with temperatures forecast in the upper 60s and mid-70s through the weekend for the New York area.

The same can be said for the south-east, with temperatures set to stay hot and with no rain forecast for the important weekend. Locations such as Florida (90 degrees) and Georgia (upper-80 degrees) are expected to see their sunny weather continue into the following week, so get the swim shorts out!

Storms to hit Central USA

However, if we move into central US, the rain begins to show its face. Storm warnings have been put in place for Chicago while tornadoes are a risk in Kansas and outlets such as Fox News have even spoken of “baseball-sixed hail” in as Central US braces for another derecho.

They add that the multi-day threat continues from the Plains into the Midwest “through at least Tuesday... Major cities that might see thunderstorms on May 25, include Denver, St. Louis and Chicago.” Temperatures should sit somewhere in the 70s.

As for the west, snow and rain is not said to be on the cards but temperatures could feel more spring-like than summer-loving, while places such as Southern California and New Mexico are set for a delightful weekend.
