Kamala Harris has selected Tim Walz as her pick for running mate in the 2024 Presidential election. The 60-year-old has served as the Governor of Minnesota since 2019 and now has a chance at becoming the number 2 politician in the country as they battle Trump and Vance for the keys to the White House.

The former former teacher and member of the US Army National Guard was elected governor in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. On both occasions, he won the role with large margins of victory.

But what is his voting record?

Tim Walz’s voting record:

Back in May of 2023, Walz was one of the signees of the “Democracy for the People Act,” a piece of legislation that promoted voting rights. It allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote as well as expanding language access in voting materials.

On the topic of voting, he also signed to restore voting rights to more than 50,000 Minnesotans on parole, probation or community release. He signed to establish the Minnesota Voting Rights Act (VRA), which makes it easier for students to vote in elections.

As a first-time campaigner, Walz opposed a ban on same-sex marriage and supported abortion rights. He voted in favour of the Affordable Care Act, supported a bill to raise the minimum wage, as well as bill that looked to reduce carbon emissions.

He is a strong defender of government support for farmers and military veterans, he mandated the use of face coverings during the COVID-19 pandemic and signed a law making marital rape illegal. USNews reports that “Walz touted the backing of several influential labor unions, including the state AFL-CIO, firefighters, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), teachers and others.”

However, some decisions have caused confusion as to his leanings, as he has opted an arguably more centrist position on certain issues, especially with gun rights, something that earned him a National Rifle Association endorsement. Walz also voted to continue funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as wanting tighter vetting of refugees entering the country.
