The 2024 presidential election is approaching, and some voters are still deciding how they will vote this November.

Although the elections are scheduled for November 5, several states offer early and absentee voting, meaning millions of ballots have already been cast.

Absentee voting is intended for people who are unable to make it to a polling location on or before election day in states that offer early voting options. While many states do not require a reason to justify your absentee ballot petition, some do.

On the other hand, mail-in voting is voting in which ballots are distributed to voters (and usually returned) by mail, as opposed to voters voting in person. However, in some cases, some voters might have a mail-in or absentee ballot and prefer to head to the polls on election day. What should one do in this position?

Here's what to do if you received an absentee or mail-in ballot but want to vote in person

According to USA.gov, you may be able to vote in person on Election Day even if you received a ballot in the mail. Each state has different rules, so we recommend checking with your nearest state or local election office for specific procedures.

Generally, these are the steps to follow if you have a mail-in ballot but want to vote in person. First, take the ballot you received in the mail to your designated polling place on Election Day when you go to vote.

Afterward, depending on your state’s rules, you may be able to exchange your absentee ballot for an in-person ballot, complete your absentee ballot and return it, or cast a provisional ballot.
