Historic Oscar-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr has died at the age of 87.

Gossett Jr was born in Brooklyn New York and made his stage debut at the age of 17. From there he went on to feature in a starring role on Broadway in 1953 with Take A Giant Step. Despite no formal training in the art, his appearance on stage was a success and soon acting jobs came his way.

Gossett Jr. won an Emmy for his role as Fiddler in Roots before he made history, becoming the first ever black man to win a Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the drill instructor in 1982′s An Officer and a Gentleman.

Decades later, in 2002, Gossett returned to Broadway to star as Billy Flynn in the musical “Chicago.”

How did Louis Gossett Jr die?

The cause of death of the actor, who sadly passed away on March 28 2024, has not been revealed. In 2010 it was revealed that Gossett had prostate cancer.

Old age did not stop Gossett Jr from appearing on the screen, and he was a guest star on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” in 2013 as well as CBS’ Extant as Quinn and Madam Secretary in 2014. He appeared in Psych (2012) and ER (2009) as well as The Spoils Before Dying in 2015.

In a statement shown to The Hollywood Reporter, Gossett Jr’s family said, “It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning. We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
