On Thursday, July 4th, the United States will celebrate another anniversary of its independence from the British Empire. As a public holiday in the US, many businesses, including banks, will adjust their hours or close completely. Since banks follow the US Federal Reserve calendar and depend on the central bank to complete certain transactions, branches will close on Thursday and reopen on Friday to serve their customers. However, anyone with online banking access should be able to complete many transactions through their digital banking portal.

Which banks will be closed?

All major banks, including Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citi, announced they will be closed on Thursday. Call local or regional banks and credit unions before you head out, as they will likely be closed as well.

What transactions won’t be able to be completed?

Chase has informed customers that on Independence Day, like all other public holidays, they cannot schedule where the funds are supposed to arrive. Additionally, “any repeating transactions that would be processed on the holiday (including Loan Payments) will be processed on the preceding business day,” so customers should plan accordingly. Critically, the bank’s Fraud Protection Services, such as Check Monitoring Services of Check Protection, will not be made available until the day following a public holiday.

Although branches will be closed, ATMs and mobile banking will operate normally, so you can still carry out essential operations today.

If you want to shop during the Fourth of July holiday, here is a list of store hours for various supermarkets and other shops.
