The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Tsunami Warning for Hawaii and Alaska after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula.
As of 6:30 pm PT, the NWS has issued 2 Tsunami Warnings. These warnings are issued when "widespread flooding is expected or occurring.“ These disasters can cause ”dangerous coastal flooding and powerful currents are possible and may continue for several hours or days after initial arrival," reports the NWS.
Tsunami Warning active in Alaska
A tsunami warning remains in effect for coastal areas of Alaska from Samalga Pass, located 30 miles southwest of Nikolski, to Attu.

The NWS advises that residents move to higher ground immediately, with the tsunami expected to arrive at:
- Shemya at 4:40 PM AKDT
- Adak at 5:40 PM AKDT
- Saint Paul at 6:55 PM AKDT.

Tsunami Warning active in Hawaii
A tsunami has been generated and poses a serious threat to all coastlines across the Hawaiian Islands, says the NWS. The NWS says the first tsunami wave could arrive at 7:17 pm HST on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Island News reported that the City and County of Honolulu Mayor, Rick Blangiardi, said that the tsunami sirens will go off at 4:10 p.m., 5:10 p.m., and 6:10 p.m.

Residents and visitors should take immediate action if they are currently in coastal areas, and are urged to evacuate to higher ground or move inland without delay. Which areas are under a Tsunami Advisory?
West Coast states and American Samoa are currently under a Tsunami Advisory.
In American Samoa, dangerous sea conditions are expected to begin around 9:39 p.m. SST on Tuesday, according to the NWS. Find location-specific information and timing on the NWS website.
