When did the US offer a reward for Ovidio Guzman, the son of ‘El Chapo’? How much was the reward?

Just over a year since a reward was offered ‘El Chapo’s’ son has been arrested in Mexico on drug-related charges.

Though the head of Sinaloa cartel is already in jail in the US, the empire of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has continued its operations in his absence.

The US government offered a $20 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of the four children of convicted gangster El Chapo back in December 2021. Known as ‘Los Chapitos’ (The Little Chapos), Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, Ovidio Guzmán López, and Joaquín Guzmán López are thought to have attained senior roles in their father’s drug empire after his jailing in 2019.

$5 million was offered for each child.

Ovidio is the son arrested on Thursday with local news outlet La Jornada claiming that he was one of the main producers and distributors of the drug fentanyl. Other reports claim Guzman Lopez was at the head of as many as 11 methamphetamine cook labs.

Ovidio had actually already been arrested in 2019 but was released after police were threatened by his cartel.

“Other information indicates that Ovidio Guzmán-López has ordered the murders of informants, a drug trafficker, and a popular Mexican singer who had refused to sing at his wedding,” the reward offer said.

What are the latest developments?

The armed raid to arrest Ovidio has led to a shootings and looting in the city of Culiacán. Videos on social media showed burning buses from the city in north-western Mexico.

“Vehicle looting and blockades are being presented in different parts of the city, we ask citizens not to leave, we are acting accordingly, we will inform when we are able to,” said Cristobal Castañeda Camarillo, Sinaloa’s Secretary of Public Security.

Writing on Twitter, Rubén Rocha Moya. the Governor of Sinaloa wrote: “Given the events that are taking place in Culiacán, I ask the citizens to remain calm and take shelter in their homes.”

“The authorities are carrying out their task and we will keep you informed.”
