As a new month approaches, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to issue another round of payments.

The agency issues millions of payments monthly to the program’s beneficiaries. Among its main recipients are retired workers, as well as people with disabilities and survivors who fall under Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

How much money are the monthly Social Security payments?

The amount of the checks varies depending on the personal situation of each beneficiary. However, official SSA estimates indicate that a retired worker can receive approximately $1,907 per month, while couples who file their taxes jointly are eligible for an average payment of $3,303. As for SSI beneficiaries, the average payments are $943 per month for individuals and $1,415 for couples.

Payments increase annually to keep pace with inflation and avoid the loss of purchasing power for beneficiaries when inflation is high. This boost is known as Cost of Living Adjustment or COLA. In 2024, the increase to the COLA was 3.2%. The increase for 2025 will be announced in October.

The date of distribution of payments is linked to the day of birth of the beneficiaries. Those who were born between the 1st and the 10th receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month, while those from the 11th to the 20th get the payment on the third. Beneficiaries whose birthdays are from the 21st to the 31st are given their checks on the last Wednesday of the month.

SSI recipients and workers who retired before May 1997 are exempt from this rule, since they receive payment on the first days of the month, regardless of their date of birth.

If any beneficiary receives SSI payments in addition to regular payments, SSA will prioritize SSI payments on the first day of the month, followed by the regular benefit on the third day. If the payment falls on a holiday or weekend, the deposit will be advanced.

Therefore, it is possible for SSI beneficiaries to receive two payments in the same month and none in one. Here is the complete payment schedule for the month of August.

  • Thursday, August 1: SSI Beneficiaries
  • Friday, August 2: Beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997
  • Wednesday, August 14: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 1st and the 10th
  • Wednesday, August 21: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 11th and the 20th
  • Wednesday, August 28: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 21st and 31st
  • Friday, August 30: SSI beneficiaries (payment corresponding to September)
