Every year now, at the end of November, the biggest shopping and discount event arrives, referred to simple as Black Friday. In recent years, this sales holiday has often stretched over several days, from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, during which millions of Americans head to stores to prepare for the holiday season.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), a record 200.4 million consumers made purchases from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday last year, surpassing the 2022 record of 196.7 million.

The NRF reports that Black Friday was the most popular day for in-person shopping last year, with 76.2 million shoppers choosing to visit physical stores, compared to 72.9 million in 2022. Black Friday was also the most popular day for online shopping, with approximately 90.6 million consumers shopping online on Black Friday last year, up from 87.2 million in 2022.

Preparations begin for Black Friday 2024

In the United States, Black Friday takes place the day after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. In 2024, Black Friday will fall on Friday, November 29, as Thanksgiving – potentially a snowy affair for some – will be on November 28.

Typically, online deals begin on Thanksgiving evening, while customers form long lines, waiting for stores to open in the early hours of Friday.

In recent years, other shopping holidays have joined Black Friday. The Saturday following Black Friday is known as Small Business Saturday, encouraging shoppers to visit local retail stores. Then, the following Monday is Cyber Monday, promoting online shopping.

Don’t forget to check out store websites like Walmart, Home Depot, Best Buy, Costco, Target, Macy’s, and Amazon, which usually start their early Black Friday deals days in advance.
