On Easter Sunday, another celebration will be held: the International Transgender Day of Visibility, which is marked every year on March 31.

It was first celebrated in 2009 and was founded by Rachel Crandall, a transgender activist from Michigan, in response to media coverage of trans people mostly revolving around violent incidents. She wanted to establish a day in which the lives of transgender people could be celebrated.

On Friday, the White House made the celebration official.

“Now, therefore, I, Joseph R. Biden JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.

Conservatives were outraged that the holiday coincided with Easter, despite the fact that it is celebrated on a fixed date each year, whereas the date for Easter always changes.

Why is International Transgender Day of Visibility celebrated?

The International TDOV aims to raise awareness about transgender people and their experiences, as well as to acknowledge their contributions to society.

It’s a day to recognize and honor transgender individuals, including those who are visible in their communities and those who may not yet feel safe or comfortable being open about their gender identity.

TDOV aims to fight transphobia, discrimination, and violence by promoting understanding, acceptance, and support for transgender people.

It provides an opportunity for the community to share their stories, fight for their rights, and foster greater visibility and representation in society.
