After his disastrous debate performance last Thursday, President Biden will give his first interview, part of which will air on ABC on Friday evening. The network’s George Stephanopoulos will conduct the interview, as the New York Times reports that a close ally of Biden says he is considering dropping out of the presidential race.

The chorus for him to abandon the campaign primarily came from the media. The New York Times Editorial Board, the New Yorker, the Chicago Tribune, and many other outlets have released opinion pieces calling on the president to bow out of the race. Although in the hours and days following the debate, many elected Democrats were throwing their support behind the president, some party members are starting to strike a more critical tone as polls trickle out following the debate. Whether or not allowing another nominee to lead the ticket will be able to land Democrats in a winning position against Trump in November is impossible to know. There are a lot of media cycles between where we are now and Election Day, and voters may begin to forget the first debate as the country inches closer to the conventions.

When will the interview air?

Stephanopoulos is likely to ask questions that force the president to reckon with the concerns of fellow Democrats, particularly the voters. For Democratic voters, the debate was not only alarming because of the president’s showing but because of Donald Trump’s lies. From claiming that the majority of Democrats and legal scholars wanted to see Roe v Wade overturned to the lie that the federal government is providing Social Secuirty benefits to undocumented immigrants who have just crossed the border, many were reminded of what a second Trump term could mean for the country.

It is unclear how long the interview will be, but a portion will be released during ABC’s World News Tonight, which airs at 6:30 p.m. ET. The remainder will air on Stephanopoulos’ ‘This Week’ on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET.
