The federal deadline for the vast majority of taxpayers is Tuesday, 18 April 2023. The IRS advises those required to submit a return to do so as early as possible if they are hoping to receive their refund delivered quickly. However, residents of three states have seen their filing deadline automatically extended after natural disasters have complicated the filing process.

Which states have seen their tax deadline extended?

Residents in some countries in Alabama, California, and Georgia have had their state and federal tax deadline moved to 16 October 2023.

  • Alabama: Autauga, Barbour, Chambers, Conecuh, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Greene, Hale, Mobile, Morgan, Sumter, and Tallapoosa;
  • California: Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Tulare, Ventura, Yolo and Yuba; and
  • Georgia: Butts, Henry, Jasper, Meriwether, Newton, Spalding, and Troup.

How can an extension be requested?

Those outside of these counties which, for other reasons, require additional time to file can request an extension through the Free File tool, no matter one’s income. If submitted, a filers tax deadline will be moved to 15 October 2023. Those who use take advantage of this penalty-free option should be aware that this does not apply to any taxes that would be due on 18 April.
