Mega Millions, I hear you say. Well, we’re now into the ‘billions’ territory - just the one, mind you, and all eyes turn to the draw on Friday 29 July to see if the jackpot is finally won.

What are my odds of winning the jackpot?

Interest is going through the roof as the Mega Millions draw produced no winner once again on Tuesday 26 July (the numbers were 7, 29, 60, 63, 66 - 15) and that initially pushed the jackpot up to an incredible - wait for it - $1.02 billion for Friday’s draw. Then, as more and more people flocked to get involved, it rose further, now sitting at $1.1 billion with just hours to go. Just to make that clear, it’s an estimated jackpot of $1,100,000,000. That is a lot of zeros!

The other thing to remember is that each ticket’s odds of winning are 1 in 302.6 million... but someone has to win, so why not you?

When is the next Mega Millions draw?

It’s worth noting that the above figure drops somewhat if you decide to take the cash option. In that case you’d only (did I really just say ‘only’?) be paid a $602.5 million lump sum. So, how to get involved...

The draw is held at 11 p.m. ET, and if won would represent the third largest gaming prize and the largest since the $1.05 billion prize was won in Michigan in January 2021. The largest ever prize won was a staggering $1.537 billion paid out in South Carolina back in October 2018. We did a piece on the largest ever wins if you fancy more info.

This will be the 31st draw in this jackpot run, which began back in April. Throughout the run - here’s its story - there have been more than 17.9 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including around 30 worth at least $1 million.

In which states can I play Mega Millions?

Mega Millions lottery tickets are available in 45 states, with Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah being the only states where it is not available. You can also buy a ticket in D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.

So far this year there have been a Mega Millions jackpot of $426 million in California, a $128 million win in New York, and a $110 million win in Minnesota. Who knows where the next one will come from?

If you are in Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, or the District of Columbia, you can buy tickets online by registering with the lotteries in those jurisdictions.
