Netflix’s chronicle of the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her ascension to the throne up to the modern day has become must-see for those who want a closer look at the life of the longest-reigning British monarch. Created by Peter Morgan, it has become a TV sensation and is currently comprised of four seasons with the fifth set to drop in November.

November 9, 2022 is the official release date for series 5. The other four series are available to watch on Netflix.

The latest season will pick up in the 1990s, with Her Royal Highness to be played by Imelda Staunton, after Claire Foy and Olivia Colman both did so for two seasons each. Staunton is best known internationally for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series.

What could series 5 have in store?

The 1990s were a turbulent decade in the UK. There was the Gulf War in 1991, the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, and the death of Princess Diana, just to name a few events that could be represented in the series. The latter, the death of Diana, will almost certianly be a major plot point in the story due to its relationship with the Royal Family.

All the characters have been recast for the new series due to the changing ages of those portrayed. Staunton is best known internationally for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series.

“I’m delighted to be inheriting the role of Queen Elizabeth from two outstanding actresses,” Staunton said. “I will do my upmost to maintain the very high standard that they set. Hopefully I look calm, collected and capable. My stomach, meanwhile, is doing somersaults.”
