Tonight, President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will face off in the first debate of the season. Another one will take place later this year.
President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will lock horns tonight in the first debate in the run-up to the November 2024 elections. The showdown will be hosted by CNN, with no studio audience present.
This is the first time the top candidates have both declined to participate in debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, the body that has organized such events from 1988 to 2020. Biden and Trump agreed that they would join debates organized by media organizations instead. Tonight’s debate is the first of two before voters troop to the polls in November.

When is the second presidential debate? Trump vs Biden part 2
The two candidates agreed in May this year to take part in the second presidential debate to be moderated by ABC News on September 10, 2024. At the time the second general election presidential debate was announced, only Biden and Trump were qualified to participate. Among the criteria set by ABC News to select the contenders to join the discussion were the following, according to Ballotpedia:
- The candidate must appear on enough state ballots to be eligible to secure at least 270 electoral votes- a majority in the Electoral College- or more.
- The candidate must receive at least 15% support in four national polls that meet ABC’s editorial standards.

ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis are set to moderate the primetime debate. The location, exact time, and the rules of the event have yet to be announced.
Viewers can catch the debate on ABC, the 24/7 streaming network ABC News Live, the ABC app, ABC.com, and Hulu.
ABC has also announced it will make the event available to simulcast on other broadcast and streaming news networks in the United States.
