When is Tina Turner’s funeral and what are the plans?

Mourners continue to gather at the home of Tina Turner in Switzerland where she passed away after an extended illness on Wednesday. The twelve-time Grammy award winner who made a historic comeback in the 1980s after leaving her abusive husband and musical partner Ike Turner died of natural causes according to her spokesperson.

The tributes to the icon who inspired new generations of artists and even changed perceptions around the sport of rugby in Australia have been pouring in. While the exact details of when and where her funeral will be held have not been made public, a spokesperson for the “Queen of Rock” said that it would be a private affair with only the legend’s closest friends and relatives in attendance for the ceremony.

“There will be a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family,” the statement said.

Tina Turner suffered from health issues in recent years

In her 2018 memoir titled ‘My Love Story’, the chart-topping singer shared that she had suffered from high blood pressure for many years, being diagnosed in 1978 with the condition, which she “didn’t think much of it” as both her mother and sister had the condition. While she did begin taking a once-a-day pill in 1985 the lack of earlier treatment had taken a toll on her kidneys and heart.

She suffered a stroke in October 2013. That came just three weeks after she married her long-time partner Erwin Bach, a German music executive. That “lightning bolt” strike to her head left her unable to walk and she feared that she would never “be able to wear high heels again, let alone dance in them.” However, she did eventually regain mobility after a stay at hospital.

Shortly thereafter, doctors discovered that her kidney function was deteriorating. Eventually, she underwent dialysis in order to get ready for a transplant. However, three years after her stroke she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. Fortunately, doctors were able to remove the cancer from her intestines.

But her kidney transplant had to be delayed and at the same time she decided not to follow mainstream medical treatment. That only acerated the problems with her kidney and in 2017 she underwent surgery to have it replaced, the donor was her husband Erwin.

Beyond physical illnesses, Tina Turner suffered from mental illness as well. The abusive relationship with her first husband Ike Turner left her with PSTD she said in her 2021 documentary ‘Tina’. During their relationship she even attempted suicide once in 1968, but after doctors saved her life she took it as a sign that she was meant to stay alive and never attempted it again.
